PE Curriculum Statement

Intent

At Hylton Castle Primary School, Physical Education, and the free extra-curricular sports clubs that we offer, provide our children with the necessary skills to take part in a broad range of physical activities including swimming, dance, gymnastics, invasion games, net/wall games, striking and fielding games and outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA). We provide opportunities for all of our children to engage in competitive sport and games both inside and outside of school to demonstrate their physically ability, teamwork, notion of fair play and sportsmanship.

Our PE teaching encourages our children to be active, creative, competitive and evaluative individuals and is delivered through engaging, enjoyable lessons that are accessible to all, regardless of ability. We aim to encourage pupils’ own sporting dreams and goals and strive to develop positive attitudes towards exercise and sport to enable them to lead healthy, active lives now and in the future.

PE Organisation

  • 2 PE lessons taught by a specialised sports coach for all children each week.
  • 2 areas of PE taught each half term (Dance/ Gymnastics/ Games/ Athletics/ OAA)
  • Swimming is taught from Year 1 to Year 6 in a block of ten lessons to maximise pupils’ skill progression. We recognise the importance of supporting all children in achieving the national curriculum target of swimming at least 25 metres using a range of strokes by the end of Year 6, and organise our swimming sessions this way to provide consistent and focused practice.
  • Pupils are encouraged to wear their PE kit in their house team colours on designated PE days. We make every effort to ensure all children are actively involved in PE lessons, and no child will be excluded from participating.
  • Y4 pupils compete in the Sunderland annual skipping competition with pupils from nearby primary schools.
  • Sports premium funding enables us to employ a specialised coach in role.
  • A detailed PE progression of skills document maps out the expectations for pupil progress from Nursery to Year 6.
