PSHE
PSHE
PSHE stands for Personal, Social and Health Education, and RSE stands for Relationships and Sex Education. Our approach in these areas is mainly drawn from the Jigsaw scheme - this combines PSHE, RSE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development.
At Hylton Castle Primary School our PSHE curriculum aims to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes pupils need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work. We believe our PSHE programme has an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils and enables children to manage life’s challenges and make the most of life’s opportunities. We encourage children to ‘Dream, Believe and Achieve’ and trust our PSHE curriculum affords the children the skills and confidence to do this, alongside other opportunities and experiences. The teaching of SMSC and Fundamental British values is weaved into the full school day and curriculum and lived in Hylton Castle’s ethos and values system.
PSHE at Hylton Castle Primary School helps to build well- rounded young people, who are ready for their next stage of life and education. Our children learn to be themselves, appreciate their differences, have dreams and aspirations, be healthy (both mentally and physically), make relationships and cope with changes in their lives. Children in Nursery to Year 6 take part in weekly Jigsaw lessons which build upon key skills and themes each year. These themes are age appropriate and support children when transitioning to the next year group. The children will meet a new Jigsaw piece each year accompanied by the Jigsaw Chime and Jerrie cat. This makes PSHE relatable, memorable and approachable for our youngest children. Jigsaw has close links to mindfulness which creates a calm, welcoming environment to learn about the key themes. Children are excited to talk about what they learn in their sessions and know that PSHE is an opportunity to talk about their personal lives and those around them. Our PSHE curriculum provides our children with lots of enriching experiences across the year.
