Mathematics at Hylton Castle Primary School
Fluent, confident, and curious mathematicians.
At Hylton Castle, the core principle of our maths curriculum is number fluency. We believe all children should develop strong foundational skills in mathematics, enabling them to access more complex concepts with confidence and curiosity.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
Our maths journey begins in the early years, where children explore mathematical concepts through rich, purposeful play and provision. This is underpinned by clear, structured teaching following the White Rose Hub planning, ensuring consistent and progressive learning.
Key Stage 1
In KS1, we build on the strong number sense developed in EYFS. Number fluency remains our primary focus, supported by the Mastering Number programme. Children are also introduced to a broad, engaging maths curriculum that develops fluency while deepening understanding through practical experiences and reasoning.
Key Stage 2
As children move into KS2, times tables knowledge, number sense, place value, and the four operations are key areas of focus. We ensure understanding is deepened through rich problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and connections to real-life contexts, preparing pupils for the challenges of upper key stage learning and beyond. Maths is taught using a mastery-style structure that has been adapted to meet the needs of our children. Through this, we use a CPA approach allowing children to explore new concepts through practical equipment/experiences moving to pictorial and abstract as and when needed.
Our Maths Lesson Structure includes
- Daily basic skills sessions to develop automaticity and mental strategies
- Lessons that revisit prior learning through memory joggers and link new concepts to known ideas
- A strong emphasis on mathematical vocabulary, enabling children to articulate their thinking clearly and confidently
- A consistent drive to promote fluency, reasoning, and problem solving
Our ambition is for every child to leave Hylton Castle as a fluent mathematician—confident, resilient, and equipped to apply their knowledge creatively and effectively in the real world.
